Board the Washington Island Ferry for a half-hour trip across the four-mile passageway between the tip of the County and the island known as “La Porte des Morts” or “the door of the dead.” The origin of its name and the County’s, arises from a fabled battle between the Winnebago and Potawatomi Indians as well as, early French settlers who learned the dangerous character of this narrow strait as ships became entombed below in the chilly, turbulent water. Visit the Washington Island Art and Nature Center located in a historic, 100 year old schoolhouse. Browse the art gallery, which displays and sells original works diverse in both topic and medium including acrylics, oils, watercolors, photography, sculpture, computer arts, and carving. Stroll through the Nature Center for a unique learning experience featuring live snakes, frogs, a 180-gallon fish tank home to native species, and an observation beehive. Explore one of the Midwest’s largest lavender farms at Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm & Shop. Walk the fields and learn about lavender and its many benefits in everyday life. Peruse their gift shop or grab a scrumptious treat from their Le Petit Bistro. Return to the ferry and travel back to the mainland. Stop at Island Orchard Cider in Ellison Bay. Using apples grown and harvested on Washington Island, you’ll enjoy a tasting of several dry, refreshing and crisp ciders. Don’t forget to take some home with you!
